What is the UGR?
Unified Glare Rating
The acronym UGR is commonly used to refer to Unified Glare Rating, that
is the degree of luminous harassing glare. This index is subject to European
and national regulations that establish the limits allowed in working
environments. Specifically, in Italy the UNI 11165: 2005 standard applies,
which indicates the criteria for calculating the unified glare index deriving
from artificial light sources.
Why is the UGR important?
Lighting is often underestimated not only by individual consumers but
also by companies. However, it is important to ensure that it is adequate for
the work environment so that work activities can be carried out in complete
safety. In fact, lighting not only guarantees a higher level of safety but also
affects the well-being of workers and stimulates productivity. For this reason, it is advisable to plan carefully the lighting.
How is the UGR measured?
The UGR takes into consideration several factors such as the quality of
the light output of the lighting products, their location within an
environment, the distance between the light sources and the observer, and the
characteristics of the environment itself (size and index of reflection). All
these elements combine to determine the general lighting quality of an
environment.
·
Shape and dimensions of the environment itself
·
Reflection of walls, ceiling, and floor
·
Type of light source
·
Arrangement and number of light sources in a space
·
Observer position
For each application area, we recommend a UGR less than a certain value.
This varies in relation to the need for quality lighting and time spent in an
environment.
